أما أبوك فعين الجود تعرفه
وأنتand you أشبهmost akin خلقcreatures of اللَهGod بالجودto generosity
وأنت أشبه خلق اللَه بالجود
As for your father, generosity's eye knows him.
Your father, the spring of generosity, is well known,
And you, of all God's creatures, are most akin to generosity.
And you are the one God's creatures most resembling generosity.
لولاwere it not for يزيدYazid ولولاand were it not for قبلهbefore him عمرUmar
لولا يزيد ولولا قبله عمر
ألقتcast إليكto you معدMaʿadd بالمقاليدwith the keys
ألقت إليك معد بالمقاليد
Were it not for Yazid, and were it not for Umar before him,
Had it not been for Yazid before, or Omar before that,
Maʿadd would have handed you the keys.
I would have yielded to you the keys of power.
ماnot ينبتgrows العودthe branch إلاexcept فيin أرومتهits rootstock
ما ينبت العود إلا في أرومته
ولاand not يكونcomes to be الجنىthe fruit إلاexcept منfrom العودthe branch
ولا يكون الجنى إلا من العود
A branch grows only from its rootstock,
Aloeswood grows but on its climbing spot,
And fruit comes only from the branch.
And from the aloeswood alone comes fruit.
