I was clothed—and denied no blessing from God—
I was ungrateful though granted grace from God
In blackness added to my own color, and a half-baked faith (reading uncertain).
A hue was added to my complexion, and one beloved drew near

وبايعت كرهاً بيعةً بعد بيعةٍ

مبهرجةً إن كان أمر مبهرجا
And unwillingly I pledged allegiance, pledge after pledge,
And I pledged, much against my will, allegiance after allegiance
Counterfeit, if ever any affair was counterfeit.
