أيَدْعُونَنِيDo they call me شَيْخاًan old man وَقَدْand indeed عِشْتُI have lived حِقْبَةًa span of time
وَهنand they (women) مِنَfrom الأزوَاجِthe husbands نَحْوِيtoward me نَوَازِعُturning away
Do they call me an old man, when I have lived for years
They call me an old man when I have lived for ages
with women turning from their husbands toward me?
yet they are women who goad me as if I'm a young groom
وَمَاand not شَابَturned gray رَأْسِيmy head مِنْfrom سِنِينَyears تَتَابَعَتْfollowed one another
عَلَيَّupon me وَلَكِنْand yet شَيَّبَتْهُmade it gray الوَقَائِعُthe battles
And my head did not turn gray from years that followed one another
My hair has not turned white with passing years
upon me; rather, battles made it gray.
but events have turned it white
