وثلاثةٌand three لماwhen اجتمعنthey gathered بمجلسيat my gathering
وثلاثةٌ لما اجتمعن بمجلسي
أقررنthey gladdened عينthe eye تنزهيmy recreation وتأنسيand my companionship
أقررن عين تنزهي وتأنسي
And three, when they met at my gathering,
When three gathered in my abode
Gladdened my eye in leisure and companionship:
They brought joy to my eyes and heart
نمامa telltale طيبٍfragrance فيamid بهارٍnarcissus باهرٍdazzling
نمام طيبٍ في بهارٍ باهرٍ
وبنفسجٍand a violet أضحىbecame حبيبbeloved of الأنفسِsouls
وبنفسجٍ أضحى حبيب الأنفسِ
A telltale of fragrance amid dazzling narcissus,
The scent of musk in radiant spring
And a violet now beloved of souls.
And violet, beloved of souls
فالسبقso precedence منهاamong them للبهارto the narcissus لأنهbecause it
فالسبق منها للبهار لأنه
يأتيit comes ونورwhile the blossoms الروضthe garden لمnot yet يتحسسِbe perceived
يأتي ونور الروض لم يتحسسِ
So the narcissus takes precedence among them, because it
Spring led them, for it comes
Comes while the garden's blossoms are not yet perceptible.
Before the garden feels the light
ثمthen البنفسجthe violet فهوfor it بتلوهfollowing it لناfor us
ثم البنفسج فهو بتلوه لنا
راقتwas pleasing ملاحتهits beauty فأصبحso it became مؤنسيmy companion
راقت ملاحته فأصبح مؤنسي
Then comes the violet, following it for us;
Then violet, whose sweetness
Its beauty was delightful, and it became my companion.
Became my companion after it
يحكيresembles لناto us المسكmusk الفتيتfinely crumbled بلونهin its color
يحكي لنا المسك الفتيت بلونه
فيon أرضground عنبرةٍa piece of ambergris كلونlike the color of السندسِfine silk
في أرض عنبرةٍ كلون السندسِ
Its color recalls finely crumbled musk to us,
Musk tells of a tender land
On a ground of ambergris, colored like fine silk.
The color of silk brocade
والخيرand goodness فيin الخيريthe wallflower إلاexcept أنهthat it
والخير في الخيري إلا أنه
يخفيit hides النسيمthe fragrant breath نهارهduring its daytime بالمجلسِin the gathering
يخفي النسيم نهاره بالمجلسِ
And goodness is in the wallflower, except that it
Goodness lies in the goodly one
Hides its fragrant breath by day in the gathering,
Though the breeze hides it by day
ويذيعهand spreads it بالليلat night فهوso it is بفعلهthrough its action
ويذيعه بالليل فهو بفعله
وبصنعهand through its deed هذاthis صديقa friend of الحندسِdeep darkness
وبصنعه هذا صديق الحندسِ
And spreads it by night; thus, through its action
And spreads it at night, thus it is
And this deed of its, it is a friend of deep darkness.
A friend to the risings of stars
فاقتthey surpassed نواويرthe blossoms of الرياضthe gardens تولناًin color (text uncertain)
فاقت نواوير الرياض تولناً
فغدتso they became لهاbeside them مثلlike النجومthe stars الكنسِthat retreat from sight
فغدت لها مثل النجوم الكنسِ
They surpassed the gardens' blossoms in color,
The meadows surpassed themselves
So the others became, beside them, like stars withdrawn from sight.
