يومٌa day كأنas though سحابهits clouds
لبستdonned عماميmy turbans المصامتplain-colored
A day whose clouds seem
A day whose clouds
to have donned my plain-colored turbans;
have donned my turban of resolve,
حُجبتwas veiled بهon it شمسthe sun الضحىmidmorning
بمثالِby the likeness of أجنحةwings الفواختthe ringdoves
on that day, the midmorning sun was veiled
veiling with it the sun of midday
by shapes like ringdoves’ wings.
like the wings of partridges.
فالغيثso the rain يبكيweeps فقدَهاher loss
والبرقُand the lightning يضحكُlaughs مثلَlike شامِتone who gloats
So the rain weeps for her loss,
So the rain weeps for it
and lightning laughs like one who gloats;
and lightning laughs gloatingly,
والرعدُand the thunder يخطُبorates مُفصحاًeloquently
والجوُّand the sky كالمحزونlike one grieving ساكتsilent
and thunder orates eloquently,
and thunder preaches eloquently
and the sky, like one grieving, is silent.
while the air remains mournfully silent.
والروضand the garden يسقيهwaters it الحياthe rain
والنورُand the blossoms ينظرُgazes مثلlike باهتone bewildered
And the garden is watered by the rain,
The meadow is watered by life
and the blossoms gaze like one bewildered.
and the light looks on pallidly.
فاشربso drink ولَذَّand take delight بجنَّةٍin a garden
واطرَبand rejoice فإننَّfor indeed العمرَlife فائتpassing
So drink, and delight in a garden,
So drink and enjoy a paradise
and rejoice, for life is passing.
and rejoice, for life is fleeting.
