We kept company with Time through lovely days,
Our companion time granted us days of joy
In them we swam and swam amid delights.
We floated in pleasures blithely

لدى نقصانها حلماً ونوما
And after they had passed, it was as though I
And after they passed it was as if
Had, as they waned, been dreaming and asleep.
I dreamed of their loss and slept

Gray hair has encamped with me and will not depart,
Old age anchored in me, no comfort
Even if I lavish reproach and blame upon it.
Even if I blame and condemn extensively
نزيلٌa lodger لاnot يزالُceases علىdespite التنائيestrangement
نزيلٌ لا يزالُ على التنائي
يسوقُdrives إِلىtoward الردىdeath يوماًa day فيوماthen another day
يسوقُ إِلى الردى يوماً فيوما
A lodger who, despite estrangement, never ceases
A guest who constantly moves on
To drive me toward death, day after day.
Taking me to ruin, day by day

وكنت أعدُّ لي عاماً فعاماً

فصرتُ أعدُ لي يوماً فيوما
And I used to count my years, year after year;
I used to prepare for myself year after year
So now I count my days, day after day.
But now I only prepare day by day
