A life of ease has fled, as though I had never

unveiled within it the brightly lit face of bliss,

nor strutted in the mantle of youth, trailing

my hems in admiration of it and proud display.

I would sport with a tender woman of supple limbs,

    and a graceful youth, honey-lipped and dark-eyed.

by shortening them, to snatch away the darkness.

So if I pass the evening heart-stricken and grieving,

drinking, exhausted, from the milk of longing,

alone, though enamored of my own excellence,

frightened and harried by the enemies of virtue,

and delighted with good deeds, as he delighted me!

whose feast I attended, whereupon he faltered!

With my excellence I exposed his shortcomings, and left him

with grief in his heart and a bone lodged in his throat.

My praise, in the ears of those who envy me, seems—

having embraced and enfolded virgin meanings—

like Taqi al-Din’s sword, which in every perilous encounter

cleaves the fully armed warrior down to the ground.
