    فدموعي بعد اللآلي عقيقُ

    Patience has forsaken me since al-ʿAqīq became deserted;

    so my tears, once pearls, are now carnelian.

    The nights parted us, and I was left with

    no company but separation.

    How much nectar I sipped from lips' sweet moisture—

    and today it is a blaze within my heart!

    And many a union—youth was my intercessor

    and my companion in it: what a fine companion!

    It was my path to everything I sought,

    when no path could be hoped for by another.

    Then gray hair put an end to it; I have

    nothing of it but remembrance and deep sighs.

    أنا منهنَّ بالوفاء حقيقُ

    The days of youth have claims upon me;

    I am duty-bound to fulfill them faithfully.

    Gray hair has added nothing to me, except

    that I am outstripped in reaching every pleasure.

    And whiteness on both sides of my beard—in it I see

    with my own eyes all that displeases me.

    And against my will I accept it and humor it,

    because I have no power to ward it off.

    O absent one, longing is present

    for you, and separation keeps me company.

    لستُ ِإلا إذا قدمتَ أفيق

    I am drunk with grief at parting from you;

    I grow sober only when you arrive.

    You are among those I fear my times may harm,

    and prudence counsels fearing even a brother.

    I shall take revenge on your distance as best I can,

    but only if good fortune lends a hand.
