Each morning and each evening, I
Every morning and every evening find me
stand vigil at your doors and offer greetings.
Standing at your doors and offering greetings.
ومُذand since قيلit was said ليto me يشكوhe complains of سقامَsickness جفونهhis eyelids
تغيَّظraged بيwithin me وجدlonging وخفَّand waned غرامpassion
And Murr, I am told, complains of sickness in his eyelids;
And since I was told he complains of sickness in his eyelids,
longing raged against me, while passion waned.
Longing has raged within me, and passion has waned.
فغيرso not غريبٍstrange فيin المفاصلthe joints حمرةredness
وغيرand not عجيبsurprising فيin الجفونthe eyelids سقامsickness
So redness in the joints is nothing strange,
So redness in the joints is nothing strange,
nor is sickness in the eyelids cause for wonder.
Nor is sickness in the eyelids surprising.
وقِدماand long ago شكوناهاwe complained of them وضمّتand they clasped قلوبناour hearts
فهاso here أنتyou منهاof them تشتكيyou complain وتُضامand you are oppressed
Long ago we complained of her, and she clasped our hearts;
And long ago we complained of them, and they clasped our hearts;
now behold—you complain of her and suffer wrong.
So here you are, complaining of them and being oppressed.
