    And how much beauty there is on earth, yet

    to my misery, my choice fell upon you.

    O you who beguiled me with gentleness until

    I cast my bridle upon the down of his cheeks.

    ونبَّهني على غلطي اختباري

    I thought you faithful, but my belief proved false;

    and my experience alerted me to my mistake.

    And how much beauty there is on earth, yet

    to my misery, my choice fell upon you.

    And how can I say my choice fell

    upon you, when only my compulsion did?

    Nor am I the first to be foolish, that

    the reproacher should rebuke me for my credulity.

    For a fine steed may stumble with its rider,

    and no blame rests upon him for the stumble.

    وكيف ومهجتي لك في إسارِ

    And if I could, I would not lack escape;

    but how, when my heart is in bondage to you?
