Leave me to my nature, O Umaym, for I
Leave me to my nature, O Umaym, for I
have found that what I acquire is what I give away.

يروح به أو يغتدي كيف يبخل
I marvel at one whom death visits by stealth,
I marvel at one whom death overtakes unawares,
carrying him off at evening or morning—how can he be miserly?
bearing him off at evening or morning—how can he be miserly?

مسرَّته بالعيش لا تتبدّل
Suppose that he is safe from death’s sudden stroke,
And suppose he is safe from sudden death,
and that his delight in life never changes—
and his delight in life does not change:

does he not see that He who created all beings
does he not see that the One who created humankind
undertakes their provision for as long as they live?
guarantees their sustenance for as long as they live?
