لامَنيreproached me فيfor اختصارِshortening كُتبيmy letters حبيبٌa beloved
لامَني في اختصارِ كُتبي حبيبٌ
فرَّقتparted بينهbetween him اللياليthe nights وبينيand between me
فرَّقت بينه الليالي وبيني
A beloved reproached me for the brevity of my letters;
I have no beloved in my abridged books
the nights have parted him from me.
The nights have separated him from me
ليتنيif only I لوif أطلتُhad written at length لكنَّbut عذريmy excuse
ليتني لو أطلتُ لكنَّ عذري
فيهfor it أنَّthat المِدادَthe ink إنسانُpupil عينيmy eye
فيه أنَّ المِدادَ إنسانُ عيني
If only I had written at length—but my excuse
If only I had lingered, but my excuse
for this is that the ink is the pupil of my eye.
Is that the ink is a human of my eyes
