أبا جعفرٍ إنّ الولاية إن تكن

أبا جعفرٍ إنّ الولاية إن تكن

مُنبِّلَةً قوماً فأنت لها نبْلُ

مُنبِّلَةً قوماً فأنت لها نبْلُ

O Abu Ja‘far, if office does indeed

O Abu Ja'far, if the authority glorifies a people, then you are its glory,

ennoble some people, you lend it nobility.

So do not distance yourself from us for anything, though you were deposed by us.

فلا ترتفع عنّا لشيء وليتَهُ

فلا ترتفع عنّا لشيء وليتَهُ

كما لم يُصغّشر عندنا شأنك العزْلُ

كما لم يُصغّشر عندنا شأنك العزْلُ

So do not hold yourself above us for a post you hold,

Will you bar me, when you allowed in your presence,

just as dismissal did not diminish your standing in our eyes.

People to whom I am superior in virtue?

أتحجْبُني وقد أذِنْتَ بحضرتي

أتحجْبُني وقد أذِنْتَ بحضرتي

لقوم ولي فيما أتيتُ لَهُ الفَضْلُ

لقوم ولي فيما أتيتُ لَهُ الفَضْلُ

Do you bar me, though in my presence you have granted entry

I will come to you despitefully if after this I come to you,

to others, while mine is the greater merit in what I came for?

Otherwise estrangement, which association between us has occasioned, remains.

سآتيك غَبّاً إن أتيتك بعدها

سآتيك غَبّاً إن أتيتك بعدها

وإِلاّ فهجرٌ جَرَّهُ بيننا الوَصْلُ

وإِلاّ فهجرٌ جَرَّهُ بيننا الوَصْلُ

I shall visit you at intervals, if I visit you after this;

and if not, estrangement between us—brought on by our closeness.
