May God reward the house of Khāqān on my behalf—for they
May God reward the family of Khāqān on my behalf, for they
have lengthened my tongue with praise and gratitude.
have lengthened my tongue with praise and thanks.
همthey استعتبواsought amends from ليfor me الدهرَTime والدهرُand Time ساخطٌangry
فأعتبنيso it appeased me بالكرهunwillingly منهon its part وبالصعرand with a haughty turn of the cheek
For me, they sought to appease Fate, though Fate was wrathful,
They sought amends for me from Time, though Time was angry;
and made it grant me favor despite its loathing and disdain.
so it appeased me, against its will and with a haughty turn of the cheek.
وهمْand they نوّهواspread the fame باسميof my name ومدّواand stretched out إلىtoward العلىthe heights of glory

They raised my name to renown and stretched my hands
And they made my name renowned and stretched toward the heights
toward the heights, reviving all remembrance of me that had died.
my two hands, and revived all remembrance of me that had died.
وهمand they عرَّفونيmade me know قدرthe worth of نفسيmyself وعظّمواand magnified

They taught me my own worth, and through their noble lineage magnified
And they showed me my own worth and magnified
what the people had belittled of my standing.
through their nobility my standing, which people had belittled.

ʿUbayd Allāh has sufficed me—may he never cease to be one
ʿUbayd Allāh relieved me—may relief ever come
through whom God delivers me from a care that once constricted my breast.
through him from God—of a worry that had constricted my breast.
كفانيrelieved me ولمand did not استكفهask him for relief متبرعاًof his own accord

فتىًa young man غيرnot ممنوعrestrained العطاءin giving ولاnor نزرscant in giving
He sufficed me though I had not asked him to, offering freely—
He relieved me without my asking, of his own accord:
a noble youth whose generosity is neither withheld nor scant;
a young man whose giving is neither withheld nor meager.
فتىa young man لاdoes not يريدdesire المالwealth إلاّexcept لبذلهto give it away
ولاand does not يتلقىmeet صفحةthe face of الحقtruth بالغدرwith treachery
a youth who desires wealth only so that he may give it away,
A young man who desires wealth only to give it away,
and never meets the face of truth with treachery.
and does not meet the face of truth with treachery.
