إنif أرُمْI seek شامخاًa lofty height منof العزّglory
إن أرُمْ شامخاً من العزّ
أدركهI attain it بذرعwith strength رحبample وباعand a reach طويلِlong
أدركه بذرع رحب وباع طويلِ
If I aspire to a lofty height of glory,
If I seek a lofty height of glory,
If I aspire to greatness and nobility
I attain it with ample reach and a long grasp.
I attain it with ample strength and a long reach.
I reach it with open arms and great patience
وإذاand when نابنيbefalls me منfrom الأمرthe matter مكbeginning of مكروه (misfortune)
وإذا نابني من الأمر مك
روهٌremainder of مكروه (misfortune) تلقيتُهI meet it بصبرwith patience جميلgracious
روهٌ تلقيتُه بصبر جميل
And if some affair brings me a hated
And when, in the course of affairs, I am struck by mis-
And if I face difficulties in life

I receive them with graceful endurance
ماnever ذممتُI found fault with المُقامَdwelling فيin بلدٍa land يوbeginning of يوماً (a day)
ما ذممتُ المُقامَ في بلدٍ يو
ماًremainder of يوماً (a day) فعاتبتهand so I reproached it بغيرwith other than الرحيلِdeparture
ماً فعاتبته بغير الرحيلِ
Never have I blamed dwelling in a land for even one
Never have I faulted dwelling in a land on any
I do not blame my stay in a country
day, save by rebuking it through departure.
