أقولI say لهto him والجوسقُand the pavilion الفردthe solitary لائحٌin view
ونحنand we بغربيon the western side of الصراةal-Sarat جوانحreclining
I say to him, with al-Jawsaq al-Fard in view,
I say to him, and the lonely new moon is shining,
While we recline on the western side of al-Sarat,
While we are on the west side of rocky ground,
وشيبand silvered البدرthe full moon الدجىthe darkness وترنمتand sang melodiously
علىon شرفاتthe battlements of القصرthe palace ورقٌgray doves صوادحُsinging aloud
And the full moon has silvered the darkness, and song rings out
And the moonlight in the darkness is growing old,
From gray, full-voiced doves on the palace battlements;
And leaves on the palace balconies are rustling,
وقدand already بردتْhave cooled كاساتناour cups وتنسمتْand wafted
رياحٌbreezes مريضاتُailing الهبوبِthe blowing صحائحُwholesome
And our cups have cooled, and there waft
Our cups have cooled, and the winds have sighed,
Breezes feeble in their blowing, yet wholesome:
Winds that blow gently at first light,
إذاif كنتَyou are مختاراًchoosing لنفسكfor yourself صاحباًa companion
فلاso let him not كانbe واشيناour tale-bearer ولاnor كانbe كاشحُa spiteful foe
“If you are choosing a companion for yourself,
If you have chosen a friend for yourself,
Let him be neither our tale-bearer nor a spiteful foe.”
He was neither a gossip or a slanderer.
