I have found you, O son of Abu Kamil,
I saw you, O son of Abu Kamil
rich in transmitted lore, with books in abundance,
Well-versed, possessing many books
عليماًwell informed بأخبارabout the events of هذاthis الزمانage
وأحوالand the circumstances of عُجْمهمtheir non-Arabs والعَرَبْand the Arabs
well versed in the events of this age
Knowledgeable of the affairs of this time
and the affairs of its non-Arabs and Arabs.
And the conditions of non-Arabs and Arabs
تُمَيِّزyou distinguish مختلفاتthe varieties of الخِلالcharacter traits
ماwhat عِيبَhas been faulted منهاamong them وماand what لمnot يُعَبْhas been faulted
You distinguish the various traits of character:
You discern the different behaviors
those deemed blameworthy and those not blamed;
What is blameworthy and what is not
فتأتيso you practice الذيthat which أنتyou أولىmost worthy بهof it
وتجتنبُand you avoid الخُلقَthe character المُجْتَنَبْto be avoided
so you practice what most befits you
So you do what is most appropriate
and avoid the character that ought to be avoided.
And avoid that which should be avoided
فهلso, is it that جازit was permissible عندكَin your view أوor هلis it that يجوزُit is permissible
أنthat يَرْجِعَshould go back الحُرُّan honorable free man فيماon what وَهَبْhe gave
Was it ever permissible in your view—or is it now—
Is it justified in your view, or permissible
for a freeborn man to take back what he gave,
That a free man takes back what he gifted
ولاand not سيّماleast of all فيin الذيthat which يبتديهhe offers first
قبلَbefore السُّؤالِbeing asked وقبلَand before الطَّلَبْthe request
especially what he offers of his own accord,
Especially what he initiates
before he is asked, before any request?
Before being asked or supplicated
وَهَبْتَyou gave لناto us خِطَّةًa plot of land منwhoever يكُنْis
بهاthere نازلاًdwelling فهوthen he is كالمغتربْlike one far from home
You gave us a plot of land; whoever
You gifted us with a piece of land that
settles there is like one far from home,
Whoever resides there is like an exile

in a region too distant to visit
In a remote area, not to be visited
except by enduring hardship and fatigue,
Except by bearing harm and fatigue
وإلاّand only علىwith رِقْبةٍwatchfulness فيduring المسيرthe journey
وخوفٍand fear علىfor النفسone's life دونrather than merely السّلَبْone's possessions
and only while keeping watch along the road
Unless with effort in the journey
and fearing for one's life, not merely one's goods.
And fear for one's soul, not to be robbed
تنالyou obtain بهاthere الزادَprovisions إنif نِلْتَهُyou obtain them
بعيدَfar المدىin distance عَسِرَdifficult المجتلبْto procure
There you obtain provisions—if you obtain them—
You obtain provision there, if you do
far distant and difficult to procure.
Far and hardly accessible
وتستعذبُand you fetch sweet الماءwater عنfrom ليلتينtwo nights' journey away
إذاwhen ماfor emphasis السّحابthe clouds بهاthere لمhave not يَصُبْpoured rain
And you fetch sweet water from two nights' journey away
And find water sweet after two nights
if the clouds have not rained there.
If rain has not poured on it
فقُمْناso we undertook بشكركto thank you فيamong العالمينall people
وسارَand circulated القريضُverse بهwith it والخُطبْand speeches
So we set about thanking you before all the world,
So we thanked you in both worlds
and verse and speeches spread those thanks abroad.
And poems and speeches flowed
وشُبْناand we mingled لنبلُغَto attain جُهْدَthe utmost of الثناءِpraise
صدقthe truth of الحديثspeech ببعضwith some الكذبfalsehood
And, to reach the utmost in praise, we mingled
And we praised to express gratitude
the truth of our words with a little falsehood:
With some truthful and false words
كأنكas though you بوّأتناhad lodged us منزلاًin a dwelling
عتيداًready بهin it لامرئٍfor a man ماwhatever أحَبْhe desired
as though you had lodged us in a dwelling
As if you located for us a house
ready with whatever a man could desire,
Suitable, disliked by no one

containing all that souls crave,
Encompassing what souls desire
surpassing the wishes of all who wish.
Beyond it one sees no other desire
فَبَيْناthen, while نقدِّرwe were planning فيهin it البناءthe building
ونسألand we were asking كيفhow يُباعis sold الخَشَبْtimber
Then, while we were planning the building there
While we evaluate the construction
and asking how much timber cost,
And ask how lumber can be sold

to begin the work, nothing startled us
To start the work, we were distracted
but an unforeseen change of mind on your part.
By nothing but your retreat

أمor فيin المروةmanly honor أمor فيin الأدبgood manners
Is such conduct, in your view, in keeping with religion,
Is this your religious or moral practice?
or with manly honor, or with good manners?
Or proper etiquette?
وماذاand what نقولshall we say لإخوانناto our brothers
إذاwhen قالsays قائلهمa speaker among them ماwhat السببthe reason
And what shall we tell our brothers
What can we say to our brothers
when one of them asks, 'What is the reason?'
If one of them asks, what is the cause?

ولاand not يقنعونَthey will be satisfied إذاif لمnot نُجِبْwe reply
For you know what lies in the answer,
You know what the answer would be
and they will not be satisfied if we do not reply.
And they will not be convinced unless we respond
