قلت لأهلي وراموا أن أميرهمُ

بماء وجهي فلم أفعلْ ولم أكدِ

I told my family, when they wanted me to provide for them

at the cost of my dignity—the water of my face—I neither did so nor came close:

لا تجمعوا أنْ تهينوني وأكرمكم

لا تجمعوا أنْ تهينوني وأكرمكم

ولا تمدُّوا إلى نيل اللئام يدي

ولا تمدُّوا إلى نيل اللئام يدي

Do not combine your humiliating me with my honoring you,

nor stretch my hand toward the bounty of the ignoble.

تبلغوا وادفعوا الحاجات ما اندفَعتْ

تبلغوا وادفعوا الحاجات ما اندفَعتْ

ولا يكن همكم في يومكم لغدِ

ولا يكن همكم في يومكم لغدِ

Make do, and ward off needs as long as they can be warded off,

and let not your concern today be for tomorrow.

فربَّ ملتمسٍ ما ليس يُدركه

فربَّ ملتمسٍ ما ليس يُدركه

ومدرك ما تمنَّى غير مجتهدِ

ومدرك ما تمنَّى غير مجتهدِ

For many a seeker seeks what he does not attain,

and many a man attains what he wished for without striving.
