إنْif وافقتْit meets with منهfrom him إصغاءattentive listening وانصاتاand silent attention
Convey to my dear friend Abu Bakr a far-borne message,
if it finds him listening attentively and in silence:
ماwhat بالis the matter with أسماعكمyour ears عنaway from دعوتيmy call وقرتْhave grown deaf
وقدand indeed دعوتكمI have called you جمعاًtogether وأشتاتاand separately
Why have your ears grown deaf to my call,
when I have called you together and separately?
كأننيas though I يومon the day أدعوكمI call you لنائبةٍfor a calamity
أدعوI summon لهاfor it منfrom بطونthe bowels of الأرضthe earth أمواتاthe dead
It is as though, when I call you in a calamity,
I were summoning the dead from the bowels of the earth to face it.
لاdo not تحسبواyou consider سرمداًeverlasting أمريmy lot وأمركمand your lot
فإنfor indeed للعسرfor hardship والإيسارand prosperity ميقاتاan appointed time
Do not think my lot and yours will last forever,
for hardship and prosperity each have their appointed time.
