بذاكwith that الفُتُورِlanguor وهذَاand this الهَيَفslenderness of waist
يَهُونُbecomes easy علىfor عاشقيكyour lovers التَّلَفdeath
With that languor and this slenderness,
With such indifference and disdain
Death is a light matter to your lovers.
It is easy for your lovers to perish
أَطَرتَyou sent flying القلوبَthe hearts بهذاwith this الجمالِbeauty
وأوقَعتَهَاand you cast them فيinto الأسىsorrow والأَسفand grief
You sent hearts flying with this beauty,
You have captivated hearts with your beauty
And cast them into sorrow and grief.
And made them fall into sorrow and grief
تكَلَّفَstrove بَدرُthe full moon الدُّجىnight's darkness أنto حكىimitate
مُحَيَّاكyour face لوif لمdid not يَشنهُmar it الكَلفdark patches
The night's full moon strove to imitate
The full moon tried to describe
Your face—if only its dark patches did not mar it.
Your beauty, had it not been hindered by pretense
وقامand stood بُعذريin my defense فيكconcerning you العذارُcheek-down
وأَجرىand it made flow دموعيmy tears لماwhen وَقَفit stood still
And your cheek-down pleaded my excuse for loving you,
My excuse defended me because of you
And set my tears flowing when it stood still.
And my tears flowed when I stopped
وكمand many a عاذلٍreproacher أنكَرَcondemned الوجدَpassion فيكfor you
عليَّon my part فلمَّاbut when رآكhe saw you اعتَرَفhe conceded
And many a reproacher condemned passion for you
How many reproachers denied the passion I have for you
In me; yet when he saw you, he conceded.
But when they saw you, they confessed
وقالواand they said بهin him صَلَفٌhaughtiness زائدُexcessive
فقلتُso I said رضيتُI am content بذاكwith that الصَّلَفhaughtiness
And they said, 'He is excessively haughty.'
And they said I was exceedingly infatuated
So I said, 'I am content with that haughtiness.'
So I said I was content with that infatuation
لئنif indeed ضاعwas wasted عمريmy life فيمنon someone سواكother than you
غراماًin love فإنthen indeed عليكyou owe الخَلَفrecompense
If indeed my life was wasted on someone other than you,
If my life is wasted on anyone but you
In love, then you owe me recompense.
Out of passion, you will be held responsible
فهاكso take يديmy hand إننيindeed I am تائبٌrepentant
فقلso say ليto me عَفَاmay pardon اللَهGod عماfor what سَلَفhas passed
So take my hand: I am repentant.
So tell me, may God forgive what is past
So tell me, 'May God pardon what has passed.'
With your mouth's essence is the water of life
بجوهرin the jewels ثغرِكyour mouth ماءُwater الحياةlife
فماذاso what يَضُرُّكwould harm you لوif يُرتَشَفit were sipped
In the jewels of your mouth lies the water of life;
What harm if it is sipped?
So what harm would it do you if it were sipped?
I have never seen essence before
ولمand did not أرَI see منfrom قبلهbefore it جوهراًa jewel
منof البهرَمانِsafflower red عليهupon it صَدَفa shell
And before it, I had never seen a jewel
From pearls upon which is a shell
With a safflower-red shell upon it.
I conceal my passion until I see you
أكاتمI conceal وجديmy passion حتىuntil أراكI see you
فَيَعرفُthen knows بالحالِfrom the condition منone who لاnot عرفknew
I conceal my passion until I see you,
So the unfamiliar will know from my state
Then even one who did not know understands from my state.
It is absurd that your love for me is hidden
وهيهاتand far be it يَخفىbe hidden غرامكlove for you عليكfrom you
بطَرفٍwith an eye هميthat streamed tears وبقلبٍand with a heart رَجَفthat trembled
And never could my love for you be hidden from you,
From my tearful eyes and trembling heart
With an eye streaming tears and a trembling heart.
