Wine cast its rays upon you,
The breeze cast its rays upon you
And its radiant face grew brighter.
And her radiant face grew brighter

The myrtle of his cheek-down turned green at his temples,
The youth blushed on her rosy cheeks
And the apples of his cheeks blushed red.
And the apple reddened from her dimples

I grew drunk on his glances and his cups,
Intoxicated by her glances and cups
So eyes and goblets became alike.
The pupils and wine glasses became equal

How fitting it would have been for me to sip his saliva,
If I were to enjoy sipping from her mouth
Had that mouth of his been permitted to me!
As if it were made permissible

I thrill when al-ʿUdhayb and Bāriq are mentioned,
I find peace remembering the alluring one
Longing for him—and how could I not thrill?
How could I not find peace in longing for him?

همّbe lost in love (likely intended) فيin هواهُlove for him فماfor there is no عليكupon you جناحُblame
The reproacher said, when I had wasted away with love for him:
The celibate one said, I was stingy with his love
Be lost in love for him—there is no blame upon you.
Do not worry, his love is not a sin

O [his hair] and his brow, were it not for you two,
Oh, her locks and forehead, without you
Evening and morning would not be known.
The dusk and dawn would not be known

The lovers’ hearts have come to dwell with you two,
The hearts of lovers have come to rely on you
And in love they go forth in the morning and return in the evening.

The signs of love appeared upon the lovers;
The causes of passion appeared to the lovers
It is all the same whether they conceal their love or [declare it?].
Silent or vocal about their love

للطَّيرof the birds منfrom فوقabove الغُصونِthe boughs صياحُa cry
Their heartaches stirred with passion when there rose
Their nightingales burst into love
A cry of birds from above the boughs.
When from the branches, birds started chirping
