تزيدُsurpass علىabove الزُّهرِthe radiant الدراريglittering stars وتَشرفُand rise higher
The virtues of the best of messengers are immense;
The virtues of the best of messengers are great
They surpass the radiant, glittering stars and rise higher.
Exceeding the bright flowers and honorable
فسبحانso glory be to منthe One who أعطاهُgranted him منunclear; apparently 'what' لمdid not يُفزattain بهit
سواهُanyone other than him عطاءًa gift لمdid not يشبهُtaint it تكلُّفُartifice
So glory to Him who granted him what none attained
Glory to Him who gave him what none other was endowed with
but he—a gift untouched by artifice.
A gift that was matchless and unpretentious
فطَلعتهso his countenance كالبدرِlike the full moon ليلةَon the night of تمِّدunclear; apparently 'its fullness'
وكالشمسand like the sun إلاexcept أنهاthat it ليسis not تُكسفُeclipsed
His countenance is like the full moon on the night of its fullness,
His appearance was like the full moon on a night it extends
and like the sun, except that it is not eclipsed.
And like the sun except that it does not eclipse
فقُلso say حينwhen يجريcirculates وسطamid نادٍa gathering حديثهُtalk of him
لقدindeed هبَّwafted forth عَرفُthe fragrance of الرَّوضِthe garden وهوُand it is مفوَّفُadorned in many colors
So say, when talk of him circulates within a gathering:
So say, when his speech flows amidst an assembly
Indeed, the fragrance of the many-hued garden has wafted forth.
The meadow's breeze has gently blown, perfumed
فواso alas حزناsorrow إنif لمdo not أصلI reach لجنابهto his presence
وللطرفand the eye has معdespite بعدdistance إليهtoward him تشوفُlonging to behold
Alas for my sorrow if I do not reach his presence!
Oh what sorrow if I cannot reach his presence
And despite the distance, my gaze turns toward him in longing.
And the eye longs for him from afar
فؤاديmy heart لبُعديbecause of my distance عنهfrom him فيهin it تلهبburning
فمنso who ليis there for me لوif شاهدتهI beheld him أتلهفI ache with longing
My heart is ablaze because I am far from him.
For my distance from him, my heart burns
Who, then, would aid me if I beheld him, aching with longing?
If only I could see him, how I would yearn
فياso O كبديmy liver ذوبيmelt اشتياقاًout of longing لقبرهfor his grave
وياand O دمعtears of عينيmy eye لاmay no أعتراكَbefall you توقُّفُpause
So, O my liver, melt with longing for his grave;
Oh my liver, melt in longing for his grave
And O tears of my eye, may no pause befall you.
And oh tears of my eyes, do not cease your flow
فصفهُso describe him وبالغand go to the utmost فيin مناقبهhis virtues بماwith whatever
أردتyou wish وأدرىand know (contextual reading) أنّthat وصفَكyour description يضعُفُfalls short
So describe him, and extol his virtues as much as
Describe him and exaggerate his virtues with what
you wish—and know that your description falls short.
You wish, though I know your description falls short
فأيُّfor what مقالٍutterance منكfrom you يُدرِكُcan reach شأوَهhis stature
وماand not يَستويare equal ديوانُa collection of شعرٍpoetry ومصحَفُand a Qur'an codex
For what words of yours could reach his stature?
For what words of yours can fully capture his stature
Nor are a volume of poetry and a copy of the Qur'an equal.
A book of poetry cannot equal the scripture
فصلىso may He send blessings عليكupon you اللَهGod ماas long as لاحَflashed بارِقٌa lightning flash
وماand as long as مالbent غُصنٌa bough مائسُswaying gracefully العطفat the flank هيَفُslender
So may God send blessings upon you as long as lightning flashes,
May Allah bless you as long as the lightning gleams
and as long as a slender bough bends, swaying gracefully at its waist.
And as long as the bendable branch sways gently in the breeze
