The messenger of guidance, sent from the house of Hashim—
The prophet of guidance, sent from the family of Hashim
Verse and prose vied in portraying his qualities.
Poetry and prose compete in describing him

He rose on the night of the Ascension to the utmost height that
He ascended on the night of Ascension to the utmost height
The radiant stars fall short of reaching.
Beyond the comprehension of the brightest stars

مفاخِرَglories يغدوcomes to stand دُونَهاbeneath them منwhoever لهhe has فخرُglory
He saw there, of God's majesty and His revelation,
He saw then, by God's decree and revelation
Glories that leave all who possess glory beneath them.
Glories beside which all other glories fade
رَضيتُI am content بهwith him ليfor myself سيِّداًa master أنتمىI claim affiliation بهthrough him

فإنfor if صحَّit is true أنيthat I عبدُهُhis slave فأناthen I am الحُرُّthe free one
I am content with him as my master, through whom I claim affiliation;
I have accepted him as my master, affiliating with him
For if it is true that I am his slave, then I am free.
So if I am called his servant, I am free

Compassionate, merciful, large-hearted, benevolent;
Kind, merciful, magnanimous, benevolent
Great, yet with neither conceit nor pride in him.
Great, so he has no confusion or arrogance

The moon—the full moon—saw the light of his brow;
He saw the full moon; the light of his radiant brow
So no wonder the moon should split from its rage.
No wonder the moon split in rage against him

فشيدَso was built up بهthrough him الإِسلامُIslam وانهدَمand collapsed الكُفرُunbelief
God struck the polytheists' religion with his religion;
God struck down the religion of the idolaters with his religion
Thus Islam was built up through him, and unbelief collapsed.
So Islam was established and unbelief destroyed

His resolve guarded the watering-place of faith—a resolve with which
The determination of his faith hoisted its banner
Conquest and victory accord within his host.
Triumph and victory match it in his party

فلمso did not يبقremain منهاof them لاneither يعوقُYaʿuq ولاnor نَسرُNasr
The firm mountains of unbelief's tyrants were crushed by his mission;
The pillars of the tyrants of unbelief were demolished by his mission
So neither Yaʿuq nor Nasr remained among them.
So no trace remains, neither rope nor pole
رجوتُI hoped بهthrough him فيat الحشرِthe Gathering ماwhat هوhe أهلُهworthy of it
فإنand if صحَّcomes true لاno خوفٌfear هُناكَthere ولاnor ذُعرُterror
I have hoped through him for what befits him at the Gathering;
Through him I hope for what he deserves in the Resurrection
And if it comes true, there will be neither fear nor terror there.
If this be true, there shall be neither fear nor dismay
