    هيهاتَ ينفع مُغرَماً كِتمَانُ

    The eyelids reveal the secret of hearts;

    Concealment can never help one in love.

    والدَّمعُ إن صَمَتَ اللِّسَنَ لسانُ

    The lover's eye is a mouth through which love's anguish is revealed;

    And tears, if the tongue falls silent, are a tongue.

    O you who ask me what my soul endures,

    My eye's speech in tears makes it plain.

    The eyelids weep for sleep—so marvel at one

    For whom the homelands weep when he departs.

    O you who sicken me, be gentle with my body, which

    Has no room left for sickness.

    I have destroyed my soul in loving you, and I

    Am content with that, O angry one.

    Far be it from your qualities, whose slave I am,

    That their beauty should be without kindness,

    Or that union with you should be withheld

    For a day, and estrangement be your lover's lot.

    I complain to you, for you know best what

    I complain of; sorrows have grown attached to me.

    O you who go forth for livelihood or strive to

    Obtain it, only to be thwarted by deprivation:

    فبعبدهِ رَحِمَ الوَرى الرَّحمنُ

    Rely on the All-Merciful, and be content with His servant;

    For through His servant the All-Merciful showed mercy to humankind.
