قِفاstop, you two تبكِweep منat ذكرىthe memory of قميصيmy shirt وسِروَالand trousers
ودَرَّاعةand a tunic ليof mine قدalready جفاhas grown coarse غُصنُهاits bough البَاليthe worn-out
Stop, you two; weep at the memory of my shirt and trousers,
Stop crying over the memory of my shirt and pants,
And a tunic of mine whose worn-out bough has grown coarse.
And a robe whose branch has withered into decay.
ولاand not سيماthe like (together: especially) والبردُand the cold وافىhas arrived بَريدُهُits courier
وحاليand my condition علىaccording to ماwhat اعتدتI have grown accustomed to فيin حالةthe state of حَاليmy condition
And especially now that cold's courier has arrived,
Especially as the cold comes with its shivering wind,
And my condition remains, as usual, just as it is.
While my state is as it used to be in my current state.
تُرىI wonder هلwhether يَرانيsee me النَّاسُthe people فيin فَرَّجيةa farajiyyah robe
أجرُّبهاI trail in it تيهاًproudly علىbefore الناسِthe people أذياليmy hems
Will people, I wonder, see me in a farajiyyah robe,
Do people see me wandering aimlessly,
Proudly trailing my hems in it before the people?
Dragging my tail behind people in confusion?
ويُمسيand spends the evening عذوليmy reproacher غيرَnot خالٍfree منof الأسىsorrow
إذاwhen باتَspends the night منof أمثالهاothers like it بيتهhis house خاليempty
And my reproacher spends the evening not free of sorrow,
My evening ends not empty of sorrow
When his house has none like it at night.
If a home like it spends the night empty.
ولوand if أننيthat I أسعىI strive لتفصيلٍfor tailoring جُبَّةa robe

And if I were striving to have a robe tailored,
If I sought to tailor a new robe,
A little money would suffice me, and I would seek no more.
What I have would suffice, not needing more money,
ولكننيbut I أسعىI strive إلىtoward نحوthe direction of جبَّةًa robe
وقدand may يبلُغُattain المَجدَglory المؤَثلdeep-rooted أمثاليpeople like me
But I strive in the direction of a robe,
But I seek a robe of glory,
And people like me may attain deep-rooted glory.
That my peers may attain greatness like me.
وكمand many a ليلةٍnight استغفرI ask forgiveness of اللَهGod بتُّهاI spent it

And many a night—I ask God's forgiveness—I spent
How many nights I prayed to Allah thoroughly,
With a cheek and saliva, between roses and crimson wine.
With a cheek and a blossom among roses and basil,
تبطنتI lay with فيهاin it بدرa full moon تمfullness مشنَّفadorned with earrings
ولمand did not أتبطنI lie with كاعباًa maiden with swelling breasts ذاتَpossessing خلخالِan anklet
In it I lay with an earring-adorned full moon,
Where I nested a full moon inclining,
And I did not lie with a full-breasted maiden wearing an anklet.
And did not nestle up to one wearing anklets.
وماand not أناI ممنamong those who يبكيweeps لأسماءfor Asma إنif نأتshe went far away
ولكنَّنيbut I أبكيI weep علىover فقدthe loss of أسماليmy tattered clothes
And I am not one who weeps for Asma if she goes far away,
I do not cry over names if they are forgotten,
But I weep over the loss of my tattered clothes.
Rather I cry over the loss of my ideals.

If Imru’ al-Qays saw what I endure
I endure from excessive worry and turmoil,
Of excessive anxiety and confusion,

He would not have [turned] toward the curtained chamber, Unayzah's chamber,
He would not have inclined towards the tents, tents of Unaizah,
Nor would he have spent the night heedless of her beauty.
Nor spent the night far from her beauty.
