خَلِّنيleave me alone منfrom ملامةِreproach اللُّوَّامِthe fault-finders
خَلِّني من ملامةِ اللُّوَّامِ
وأَدرand pass round فيin الدُّجَىthe darkness كئوسَcups المُدَامِwine
وأَدر في الدُّجَى كئوسَ المُدَامِ
Spare me the reproaches of the fault-finders.
Leave me be, you who blame me,
And pass round cups of wine in the darkness.
And pour the wine cups in the dark of night.
وتَيقَّظand stay awake للَّهوfor revelry مذsince نامfell asleep طَرفُthe eye of الدthe— (fragment of 'time')
وتَيقَّظ للَّهو مذ نام طَرفُ الد
دهرtime وارتَعand revel فيin غفلةthe heedlessness of الأيامِthe days
دهر وارتَع في غفلة الأيامِ
And stay awake for revelry, now that the eye of
Awaken to pleasure though the eyelids sleep,
time has slept; revel while the days are heedless.
While time marches on in heedless days.
وإنماand only العيشُlife أنthat يُوَافيكcomes to you فيin الليلthe night
وإنما العيشُ أن يُوَافيك في الليل
بشمسwith the sun of النهارthe day بَدرُa full moon التَّمَامِcompleteness
بشمس النهار بَدرُ التَّمَامِ
And life is only this: to be visited at night
For life is to find you in the night
by a full moon bearing the sun of day.
The sun of day, the full moon's light.
حَيِّهاgreet her بالقبولwith acceptance منكfrom you كماas حَيَّتكshe greeted you
حَيِّها بالقبول منك كما حَيَّتك
والقَand meet ابتسامهاher smile بابتسامِwith a smile
والقَ ابتسامها بابتسامِ
Greet her with acceptance, as she has greeted you,
Greet her with acceptance from you, as she greeted you,
and meet her smile with a smile.
And meet her smile with a smile.
ذاتُpossessing لُطفٍdelicacy حَلتhas grown sweet وإنand even if تَكُshe is ماnot حلَّتhas taken residence
ذاتُ لُطفٍ حَلت وإن تَكُ ما حلَّت
محلَّthe place of الأرواحsouls فيin الأجسامِbodies
محلَّ الأرواح في الأجسامِ
Delicate and sweet, even if she has not taken
A gentle soul has come, though she came not before,
the place of souls within bodies.
To fill souls in bodies.
فاسقنيهاso give it to me to drink صرفاًunmixed ونَزَهand keep pure حَلالlawful الماءwater
فاسقنيها صرفاً ونَزَه حَلال الماء
عنfrom أنthat تَشُوبَهُyou taint it بحَرامwith the forbidden
عن أن تَشُوبَهُ بحَرام
So pour her for me unmixed, and keep lawful water
So serve it to me pure and fresh like lawful water,
free from your tainting it with the forbidden.
Far from anything sinful.
وَالهُand turn away عنfrom رامةRama ونَجدٍand Najd وعنand from وَصفٍdescription
وَالهُ عن رامة ونَجدٍ وعن وَصفٍ
أراكarak trees لديهماin those two places وبَشَامِand basham trees
أراك لديهما وبَشَامِ
And turn away from Rama and Najd, and from descriptions
Take it far from gossip and immorality and from description -
of arak trees there, and basham trees.
I see you have them both as well as wine.
خَلِّleave رَبعاًa campsite عَفاhas faded وباكرand visit at dawn رَبيعاًspringtime
خَلِّ رَبعاً عَفا وباكر رَبيعاً
أنتجتهbrought it forth مُقدِّماتُthe forerunners of الغَمَامِthe clouds
أنتجته مُقدِّماتُ الغَمَامِ
Leave the faded campsite, and greet spring at dawn,
Leave a garden of pardon and an early spring
brought forth by the first rainclouds.
Brought by the harbingers of clouds.
إنماonly العمرlife هَجمَةٌa rush ومسراتُand the joys of
إنما العمر هَجمَةٌ ومسراتُ
اللياليthe nights تمرُّpass كالأحلامِlike dreams
الليالي تمرُّ كالأحلامِ
Life is but a rush, and the joys
For life is an onslaught, and the joys
of nights pass like dreams.
Of nights pass like dreams.
وإذاand if خفتyou fear منfrom أثامِpunishment for sin فعَفوُthen the pardon of اللَهGod
وإذا خفت من أثامِ فعَفوُ اللَه
لاnot يُرتَجىis hoped for لغيرfor anything other than الاثامِsins
لا يُرتَجى لغير الاثامِ
And if you fear sin's punishment, God's pardon
And if you fear sins, God's pardon
is sought for sins alone.
Cannot be hoped for by any but sinners.
تُبrepent عنof التَّوبَةِthe repentance التيthat سَوَّلَتهاmade it seem tempting
تُب عن التَّوبَةِ التي سَوَّلَتها
لكto you فيin النفسthe soul كثرةa multitude of الأوهامِdelusions
لك في النفس كثرة الأوهامِ
Repent of the repentance made tempting
Repent of the repentance which
to you in your soul by a host of delusions.
Whispered empty fancies into your soul.
وانسَهاand forget it طولthroughout شهرthe month of شعبانَSha'ban واذكُرand remember
وانسَها طول شهر شعبانَ واذكُر
هاit إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle استهلَّbegins شهرُthe month of الصيامِfasting
ها إذا ما استهلَّ شهرُ الصيامِ
And forget it throughout the month of Sha'ban, and remember
Forget it through all of Sha'ban, and recall it
it when the month of fasting begins.
When the month of fasting begins.
وتناولand take رَطلاًa ratl (weight measure) عَتيقاًaged منof الخمرwine
وتناول رَطلاً عَتيقاً من الخمر
عَقِيبَafter الغذاءfood والحَمَّامِand the bath
عَقِيبَ الغذاء والحَمَّامِ
And take a ratl of aged wine
Take an aged bottle of wine
after food and the bath.
After food and bath.
واجعلand make النَّقلَsnacks served with wine لَثمَkissing خَدٍa cheek وثَغرٍand lips
واجعل النَّقلَ لَثمَ خَدٍ وثَغرٍ
منof هلالٍa crescent moon أبدَاهrevealed it غُصنُa bough of قَوَامstature
من هلالٍ أبدَاه غُصنُ قَوَام
And make your wine's accompaniment kisses on cheek and lips
Let the taste be a kiss of cheek and lip
of a crescent moon revealed by a bough-like figure.

صِفَةٌa description تشهدbears witness الجماعةthe company إنيthat I
صِفَةٌ تشهد الجماعة إني
لستI am not أرضىcontent فيهاin it ابنَIbn (son of) سيناSina غلاميmy servant
لست أرضى فيها ابنَ سينا غلامي
The company attests, regarding this description, that I
