She never gave you her estrangement in place of union with her

without lavishing her stinginess upon you.

    فعسا يُعلَلكَ الخيالُ يمثلها

    So seek slumber for your eye, hoping to dream;

for perhaps the phantom will soothe you by taking her form.

A visit from her phantom is far beyond your reach

so long as your eye stays wakeful for her sake.

You burdened yourself beyond your accustomed share of

love's toil, and you yourself grew weary bearing it.

O my companion, by God, if you come to the sanctuary,

stop at the dwellings and inquire after their people.

And kiss all their soil on my behalf, for I have

a heart that dwells in their rugged lands and their plains.

And whenever she whose love has bewitched you appears before you,

then silence your heart lest her arrows strike you.

And if she claims all the loveliness of fair women,

concede it, for she has proved it through her coquetry.

Do you think the nights of union will bring back one night

from among them, so a part might suffice in place of all?

And how long shall I broaden my aspirations in this world,

while its pathways have already narrowed for me?

The days bear no blame, in my eyes, for what

they have done, and the forbearing man excuses them for their ignorance.

How long shall I reproach them, as though I had not been made to forget

their ill deeds by the kindness of Sadr al-Din?

The vizierate has risen high under his protection, for it

is one of his own, and he is one of its own.

    وحذارِ تُطمِعُك السيوف بصَقلها

    Do not be deceived by the clemency in his character;

and beware lest swords entice you with their polish.
