Peace be upon the Chosen One of the house of Hashim,
Greetings upon the Chosen One from the family of Hashim,
And upon him who is sent to the jinn and humankind.
And the one who was sent to mankind and jinn.

He journeyed by night, on the night of the Ascension, from the land of Mecca,
He ascended on the night of Israa from the land of Makkah,
As he came on his night journey, by night, to Jerusalem.
As he came on his night journey to Al-Quds.

He rose to a station never attained before him
He reached a place that no prophet or angel reached before him,
By prophet or angel, and was singled out for intimacy.
A prophet, not an angel, and was granted intimacy.

His eminence put Saturn to shame in loftiness,
His leadership was adorned with the raising of the heavens,
And his countenance surpassed the radiance of the full moon and the sun.
And his ascension surpassed the brilliance of the moon and sun.

Ask Kisra about him, for on the day of his appearance he
Ask Khosrow, for on the day of his appearance,
Knew for certain that the Arabs could prevail over the Persians.
He was certain that the Arabs would overcome the Persians.

I rejoiced in the praise of him that I composed,
I was delighted with what I composed in his praise,
So, after being tongue-tied, I became more eloquent than Quss.
So I became after blindness more eloquent than a storyteller.
سَواءٌalike علىto مُشتافهone who longs for him الصبحُmorning والدُّجىand darkness
فيغدُوso he enters morning منfrom الوجدِlonging الشَّديدِintense كماas يُمسىhe enters evening
Morning and darkness are alike to one who longs for him;
The dawn and the night are equal for the one longing for him,
So, in his fierce longing, he meets morning as he meets evening.
Who starts the day with intense love, and ends it the same.

The innermost core of my heart was entrusted with the secret of love for him,
My heart, bright white, held the secret of loving him,
As secrets are entrusted by the soul to parchment.
As secrets are held in the self, engraved in rock.

I shall find solace in kissing the grave—the grave of Muhammad.
I will kiss the soil of the grave, the grave of Muhammad,
For from her I used to quench my thirst, from her dusky lips.
For from it I would quench my thirst, from its pebbles.

May the peace of creation's God, in nearness and distance,
Greetings O God of creation, in intimacy and distance,
Be upon that body laid to rest in the grave.
Upon that body laid to rest in the sand.
