يا جمال الدين لي حَقٌ

يا جمال الدين لي حَقٌ

على المولى وحُرمَه

على المولى وحُرمَه

O Jamal al-Din, I have a claim

O Jamal al-Din, I have a right

upon my lord, and a bond deserving respect,

Upon the Master and his sanctuary,

وولاءٌ أكَّدَتَّهُ

وولاءٌ أكَّدَتَّهُ

خِدمةٌ تتبعُ خدمَه

خِدمةٌ تتبعُ خدمَه

and loyalty confirmed

And a loyalty he has affirmed

by service following service.

Through service that follows his service.

وبمملوكك هَمٌّ

وبمملوكك هَمٌّ

لا يُطيق الآن كَتمه

لا يُطيق الآن كَتمه

And your bondsman bears a worry

And for your slave there is a care

that he cannot now conceal.

He can no longer conceal,

هجم البردُ عليه

هجم البردُ عليه

هجمةُ من بعد هجمه

هجمةُ من بعد هجمه

The cold has assailed him,

The cold has attacked him

onslaught after onslaught.

In repeated assaults.

لا تسل عنه فقد فصل

لا تسل عنه فقد فصل

هذا الفَصلُ عظمه

هذا الفَصلُ عظمه

Do not ask about him, for it has disjointed—

Do not ask after him, for this separation

this season—his bones.

Has broken his bones.

وله أثرٌ لحاف

وله أثرٌ لحاف

مَحتِ الأيامُ رَسمه

مَحتِ الأيامُ رَسمه

And he has a remnant of a quilt;

And he has a trace like a wrap

the days have erased its outline.

Effaced by time.

ماتَ بَرداً والذي وا

ماتَ بَرداً والذي وا

راهُ ما أتقنَ رَدمه

راهُ ما أتقنَ رَدمه

He died of cold, and whoever buried

He died of cold, and whoever

him did not fill in his grave well.

فَهوَ إذ يُنجَشُ منه

في بَقايا القُطن رِمَّه

he is a mouldering corpse amid remnants of cotton.

In the remnants of cotton is his frame.

أنت في الجود نبيٌّ

أنت في الجود نبيٌّ

وهو في حُبِّك أُمَّه

وهو في حُبِّك أُمَّه

You are a prophet in generosity,

You are in generosity a prophet,

and in his love for you, he is a whole nation.

And he in your love a mother.
