He possessed a nobility of which Saturn had not even a share,
He memorized volumes, the like of which no creature has memorized some
And surpassing forbearance, mountain-like—nay, weightier still.
And a dream except like a towering mountain, nay it is more steadfast

Forbearing: whenever a sinner seeks his abode,
He is forbearing, so if a sinner approaches him
Hoping for pardon from him, he pardons and forgives.
He hopes for pardon from him, he pardons and overlooks

Praiseworthy in his endeavors—how often his palm held pebbles,
Of glorious endeavors, how many pebbles has his palm grasped
And by God's leave they began to glorify Him.
Then they left by God's permission while glorifying

A keen sword, now unsheathed to uphold the truth,
A sword for the victory of truth, he became bare
Ever unsheathed, he passes evening and morning.
At the station of denudation he spends the night and wakes

Forbidden to my eyes is sleep, which
Sleep is forbidden upon my eyes, that which
Is driven away by tears streaming down my cheeks.
Saddens it, a tear flows down my cheek

I have kept my pledges to the beloved, for whom
I have kept the covenants of the beloved, for whom
My heart holds an agonizing longing, though he has not drawn near.
There is love in my heart, even if he does not come near, a love that makes happy

O doves of al-Liwa, hint at your lament, for I
The dove of passion, unburden your complaints, indeed I
Hint at my lament, and at times speak plainly.
Unburden complaints and at times explicitly state
