May God curse the days that passed in idleness,

while I gained no wished-for boon from the Prophet's tomb.

A lifetime was surely wasted in which I never made my way

to the best of those sent forth and the best of messengers.

Goodness is yours, O best of all the prophets,

and you whose excellence has no need of proof.

    يُسكِّنُ مِنَّا حَرَّ كُلِّ غليلِ

    Your gate is indeed the greatest refuge on the day of fear;

it stills within us the heat of every burning thirst.

We seek refuge in your high standing when we fear Hell,

for your standing provides sheltering shade there.

Perhaps my days will bring me what I long for,

so I may rejoice in my arrival before death.

By my life, I truly hope to reach Yathrib,

and it suffices me there that I am a wayfarer.

I dallied while desire held sway,

but that diversion lasted only a little while.

I put on long garments of sin,

and in youth I dragged the trains of my garments.

I sought refuge in God's pardon, secretly and openly,

that I might gain a gracious covering at the Resurrection.
