قَطَعتُI spent شَبيبَتيmy youth وأَضَعتُand I squandered عُمريmy life
وقدand indeed أَتعَبتُI wearied فيin الهَذَيانِbabbling فكريmy mind
I spent my youth and squandered my life,
I wasted my youth and spent my life
and wearied my mind with senseless babbling.
Exhausting my mind with delusions
وماand not ليfor me أجرةٌa payment فيهfor it ولاnor ليfor me
إذاwhen ما(emphasis) متُّI die يوماone day بَعضُsome أجرreward
I receive no payment for it, nor shall I have,
Without gaining any reward or benefit
when I die someday, even a little reward.
If I die one day, I will have little to show
قرأتُI read النحوَgrammar تبياناًfor clarity وفَهماًand understanding
إلىuntil أنthat كُعتُI recoiled منهfrom it وضاقand grew tight صدريmy breast
I studied grammar for clarity and understanding,
I studied grammar intently to understand
until I recoiled from it and my breast grew tight.
Until I was fed up and my chest tightened
فماso not استنبَطتُI derived منهfrom it سوىexcept محالabsurdity
يُحَالis referred بِهwith it علىto زَيدٍZayd وعَمرِوand Amr
So I derived from it nothing but absurdity,
All I gained were absurd examples
referred to Zayd and Amr.
With Zayd and Amr as subjects
فكانso was النصبthe accusative فيهin it عليَّupon me نصباًweariness
وكانand was الرفَّعُthe nominative; raising فيهin it لغيرfor other than قدريmy standing
So its accusative brought me weariness,
Grammatical case rules felt like impositions on me
and its nominative raised a standing other than mine.
Nominatives were not my fate
وكانand was الخفضُthe genitive; lowering فيهin it جلَّmost of حَظِّىmy share
وكانand was الجزمthe jussive; cutting off فيهin it لقطعfor cutting off ذكريmention of me
Its genitive—its lowering—was most of my lot,
The genitives were the sum of my luck
and its jussive served to cut off mention of me.
The imperatives cut short my mention
وفيand into علمِthe science of العَرُوضprosody دخلتُI entered جَهلاignorantly
وعُمتُand I swam بخفَّتيwith my light-mindedness فيin كلِّevery بَحرٍsea; poetic meter
And I entered the science of prosody in ignorance,
And in the science of prosody, I entered ignorant
and, light-mindedly, swam in every sea of meter.
My lightness spread through every meter
فأذكرَنيso it reminded me بهthrough it التفعيلُthe metrical patterning بَيتاًa verse
تضمَّنَincluded نصفَهُhalf of it الشَيخُthe shaykh المَعَرِّىal-Ma'arri
So its metrical patterning reminded me of a verse,
So the prosodic feet reminded me of a line
half of which the shaykh al-Ma'arri included:
Whose first hemistich was by Al-Ma'arri

Mufāʿallun, mufāʿalatun, faʿūlun—
Mustafa'ilun, mustaf'ilatun, fa'ulun
"A fanciful tale, O Umm Amr!"
Nonsense talk, O mother of Amr!
وكمand how many a يومٍday بِبَيعِin selling اللَّحمِmeat عنديat my place
يُعَدُّis reckoned منbecause of البَوَارِslack trade بأَلفِas a thousand شَهرِmonths
And many a day of selling meat at my place
And how many days selling meat I counted
counts, for lack of trade, as a thousand months.
As thousands of months of misery
ولماand when أنthat غَدَاbecame لاno بَيعَsale فيهin it

معwith الميزانthe scales أشبَهَresembled يَومَthe day of حَشرِgathering
And when it came to have no sales,
But when there were no sales one day
with the scales, it resembled the Day of Gathering.
The scales were like Judgment Day
ودُكَّانيand my shop جَهَنَّمُHell إذfor زُبُونيَّmy customers
زَبَانِيَةٌHell's wardens بهمthrough them تعذيبُthe torment of سرِّىmy inner self
And my shop is Hell, for my customers
My shop became a hell, with my customers
are Hell's wardens, through whom my inner self is tormented.
Devils torturing my innermost thoughts
وفيهاand in it زَفرَةٌa sigh; a meat-stench منfrom غيرother than لَحمِmeat
وقدand indeed وُضِعَتhave been placed سلاسلُهاits chains بنَحريat my throat
And in it is a foul breath, though there is no meat,
With wailing without meat
and its chains have been laid upon my throat.
And chains bound around my neck
وقدand indeed طالlasted long العذابُthe torment عليَّupon me فيهاin it
لمَاfor what قَدَّمتُI sent ahead منof بَخسِshort measure ووِزرِand sin
And my torment in it has lasted long,
The torment was prolonged for me there
for the short measure and sin I have committed.
For my fraud and burden
فإنso if لامblames الغدولthe faultfinder (reading uncertain) أقولI say دعنيleave me
أناI فيin ضيعةruin; neglect فيin وسطِthe middle of عُمرِيmy life
So if the faultfinder blames me, I say, "Leave me alone."
So if the swindlers blame me, I say leave me be
I am going to waste in the middle of my life.
I am in decline in the midst of my life
وعَمِّيand my uncle قدindeed غَدَاbecame by morning غَمِّيmy grief وأمسَىand became by evening
يحطُّlowers ببخلِهِthrough his stinginess قدريmy standing وقَدرِيand my cooking pot
And my uncle has become my grief, morning and evening,
My uncle's mood swings are my woe
lowering, through his stinginess, my standing and my cooking pot.
His stinginess diminishes my worth
وإِنَّand indeed الشِّعرَpoetry دونbelow عُلاهُhis eminence قَدراًin rank

And poetry is beneath his eminence in rank,
For poetry without mastery is lowly
especially when it is my poetry,
Especially my poetry

Since I never studied its canon

Or grammar with Ibn Barri

Yet I have dabbled in language and grammar,
I dabbled in language and grammar
without knowledge, and through that my reputation spread.
Without knowledge, spreading my fame

And by your life, I do not understand "what spread it out,"
I do not know what your life is like
and I have admitted that I do not know.
I admit I do not know

And this is my account; if you probed me,
And this is my news, but if you unveiled me
true knowledge of me would belittle it by exposing my ignorance.
My ignorance would belittle my wisdom

As though I were like someone who, once
It's as if I'm like some people who
he learned two verses, became a teacher of Quran recitation.
When they learn two verses, become a reciter
