أصبحتُ منها مُعَذَّبَ القلبِ
Enough ill fortune, O my trade—enough for me!
My rags suffice me after my robe they’ve rent;
Through it I have become tormented at heart,
Suffice me a heart that grief's throes have bent,

طول اكتسابي ذَنباً بلا كَسبِ
With my garment and my record sullied by
A tattered frock and old patched tent
My long earning of sin without earnings.
As daily I acquire sins without intent.

I work on meat for supper, yet do not
I toil to get meat for our meal for to dine,
Obtain supper from it—what, then, is my sin?
Yet cannot taste it or food that is fine,

My heart is left empty, and my mouth is filthy,
What sin have I done? My poor heart is pine,
As though, in my butchery, I were my own dog.
My foul mouth's like a dog's in my shambles malign.
