افعل معي ما أنت أَهلُه
ياO مَنthe one who لديهin his possession الفضلُbounty كلُّهall of it
يا مَن لديه الفضلُ كلُّه
Deal with me as befits you,

O you who hold all bounty in your hands!
O you who possess all bounty.
ياO حاكماًruler عَمَّencompassed البريَّةcreation
يا حاكماً عَمَّ البريَّة
بعدafter ظلمِoppression سواهُanother besides him عَدلُهhis justice
بعد ظلمِ سواهُ عَدلُه
O ruler, all creation was embraced
O ruler, all creation was embraced
by your justice, after another’s tyranny.

ياO مَنthe one who تَشَرَّفَتwas honored المحلَّةal-Mahalla (the locality)
يا مَن تَشَرَّفَت المحلَّة
إذwhen غداbecame فيهاin it مَحَلُّهhis dwelling
إذ غدا فيها مَحَلُّه
O you through whom the quarter gained honor
O you—al-Mahalla was honored
when your dwelling came to stand within it.

مولايَmy lord لاdo not تُبدِshow أشتغاpreoccupation (continued next line)
مولايَ لا تُبدِ أشتغا
لاcompletion of 'preoccupation' عنaway from محبّa lover أنتyou شُغلُهhis preoccupation
لا عن محبّ أنت شُغلُه
My lord, do not show yourself preoccupied—
My lord, do not show yourself distracted
do not turn from a lover whose sole concern is you.

ضاقتgrew narrow عليهِfor him ياO رَحيبَbroad
ضاقت عليهِ يا رَحيبَ
الصَّدرِthe breast منذsince رَحَلتَyou departed سُبلهhis paths
الصَّدرِ منذ رَحَلتَ سُبله
For him, O broad-hearted one, have narrowed
His paths have narrowed, O broad
his paths, ever since you departed.

كَفَرَتdisbelieved بهin him الأصحابُthe companions إذwhen
كَفَرَت به الأصحابُ إذ
أوراقُهhis pages بالشعرwith verse رَسلُهhis messengers
أوراقُه بالشعر رَسلُه
His friends disowned him when

وتباعدتand drew away عنfrom قُربهhis company
وتباعدت عن قُربه
إخوانُهُhis brothers وجَفَتهُand shunned him أهلُهhis family
إخوانُهُ وجَفَتهُ أهلُه
and far from his company withdrew
And from his company drew away
his brethren, while his own family shunned him.
