If I do not make my messenger angry with you,

then may I never win a wish from your bounty.

The fair-faced one demands patience of me,

yet not all patience in love is fair.

And I hide from him how I have died of love's anguish,

yet my tears and wasting reveal it to him.

Love decreed that I suffer for love of a pampered one,

and lavish my soul in pursuit of a miser.

And I weep tears whose downpour has drenched the earth,

though it has not quenched even part of my burning thirst.

O breeze of the east, convey a greeting to him from me,

for you are the best guardian of this prince.

Now that I have loved a slender branch,

how fitting that the breeze should be my messenger!

And many a night, from his cheeks and his saliva,

I won fresh blossoms and wine.

    The night drags on for me throughout his estrangement;

who, then, can grant me a long night of union?

And why should I not weep for the joy of his nearness,

when that joy lasted only a little while?
