من خطوب الدهرِ إن الدهر خَصمي
O chief of the age, deal fairly with me
O ruler of Time, grant me justice
against the blows of Time—for Time is my foe.
against Time’s calamities, for Time is my adversary.

What a Time has charged at me with its days,
What an age, charging with its days
and its nights—its gray steeds and its black!
and nights as gray steeds and black!

By my life, had it known that I was one
And by my life, had it known that I was among
of your young retainers, it would never have thought to wrong me.
your servants, it would not have thought of wronging me.
