People's lapses are pardoned by people.

How long, then, will there be talk and countertalk between us?

    Your dreadful estrangement alarmed me,

after union with you had delighted me.

You are my master—consider it a lapse

that came from me; where, then, is your forbearance?

By Him who spared you love's anguish, which

left no room for patience in my breast,

do not call me to account for a fault that came to light,

for my excuse for it is false and absurd.

Shame is plain upon my face

when I meet you, and my speech falters.

So pardon me for stammering—what, then,

is left to me if you do not forgive a spoken word?

I am your slave, yet I

have no means of averting what is decreed.

    Punish all my limbs,

except my heart, for it cannot bear it.
