He came forward like the moon at its full,

A halo from his face-veil surrounding him.

And his radiance tore the robe of darkness

Since he made the stars rise with his smile.

And he swayed, so the bān-tree branches longed

To borrow that suppleness from his stature.

His glance slew the hearts of lovers,

Unjustly, with the arrows it had nocked.

O eyelid of his, be gentle with a lover wasted by sickness:

Your languor has become the source of his illness.

And you, O his sides—is there any tenderness

    For his yearning-hearted, love-maddened admirer?

Who can bring me one whose cheek holds rainwater

Above a flame that has kept blazing?

How many a night he made me drunk with his saliva,

The cup of his mouth leaving no need for his wine.

And I spent the night unafraid of his guards,

For his hair revealed the gloom of its darkness.

And between us was a sweet embrace; how often

My longing had compelled me to hold him close!

This is the life I wished

    Time would help me sustain.

A breast in which a secret of God's is lodged,

Which wisdom reveals through his judgments.

And oh, the shame of bright swords! And woe to the spears,

The brown ones, at what he displays through his pens!

Resolves by which he turned the days into

His helpers, and Time into one of his servants.

And a vigilance with which God has singled him out,

Revealing the unseen to him through His inspiration.

And a might that, were the lion to behold it,

He would use cunning in his retreat.
