خَدٌّa cheek هوit is الجنةparadise إِلاّexcept
خَدٌّ هو الجنة إِلاّ
أنَّهُthat it ذوpossessing لَهَبِflame
أنَّهُ ذو لَهَبِ
A cheek that is paradise, except
A cheek that's paradise, if not
That it bears a flame.
For its scorching flame,
قلبيmy heart سليمٌstung; also, unharmed فيin الهوىlove
قلبي سليمٌ في الهوى
بصُدغهby his temple-lock المُعَقرَبِscorpion-curled
بصُدغه المُعَقرَبِ
My heart is stung in love
My heart is still whole in love
By his scorpion-curled temple-lock.
With its hollowed arch.
ياO مالكيmy master ماno شافعيmy intercessor
يا مالكي ما شافعي
إليكwith you إلاexcept أدبيmy courtesy
إليك إلا أدبي
O my master, I have no intercessor
My master, none intercedes for me
With you except my courtesy.
Before you but my courtesy,
حاشاكfar be it from you أنthat نحتاجwe need للتfor the… (word continues)
