لا تقطعن عادةَ برّ ولا

لا تقطعن عادةَ برّ ولا

تجعل عقابَ المريدِ في رِزقِهِ

تجعل عقابَ المريدِ في رِزقِهِ

Never discontinue a practice of kindness, nor

Do not cut off the habit of doing good

make the petitioner's livelihood a means of punishing him.

Nor make the sustenance of the devotee his punishment

واصفح عن الجاني فإنَّ الذي

واصفح عن الجاني فإنَّ الذي

ترجوه عفو اللَه عن خلقهِ

ترجوه عفو اللَه عن خلقهِ

And pardon the offender, for what

Overlook the sins of others, for He

you hope for is God's pardon for His creatures.

Whose forgiveness you hope for, forgives His creation

وإن بدت من صاحب زلةٌ

وإن بدت من صاحب زلةٌ

فاستُرهُ بالإغضاء واستبقه

فاستُرهُ بالإغضاء واستبقه

And if a companion's lapse comes to light,

And if a friend commits a mistake

then shield him by overlooking it, and retain his friendship.

Conceal it by ignoring it and excel him in virtue

فإن إثم الإفك من مسطح

فإن إثم الإفك من مسطح

يحطَّ قدرَ النجم عن أفقِهِ

يحطَّ قدرَ النجم عن أفقِهِ

For the sin of slander on Misṭaḥ's part

For the sin of slander by Mustah

brings down the star's stature from its horizon.

Lowers the star's status from its zenith

وقد جرى منه الذي قد جرى

وقد جرى منه الذي قد جرى

وعوتب الصديق في حقهِ

وعوتب الصديق في حقهِ

And what happened had indeed happened at his hands,

What has happened, happened

and al-Ṣiddīq was reproached on his account.

And the friend was admonished for his own good
