يَديmy hand لاdoes not تَعافُshun الكأسَthe cup أُنساًfor pleasure بشربِهاin drinking it
يَدي لا تَعافُ الكأسَ أُنساً بشربِها
وَلَكِنbut تعافُshuns الكأسَthe cup مَعwith دنِسٍfilthy وغدِknave
وَلَكِن تعافُ الكأسَ مَع دنِسٍ وغدِ
My hand does not shrink from the cup, taking delight in drinking it;
My hand does not shun the cup, for the pleasure of drinking it;
My hand does not reject the cup, finding joy in drinking it,
But it shuns the cup when shared with a filthy, ignoble wretch.
but it shuns the cup in the company of a filthy knave.
But it rejects the cup when shared with a vile scoundrel.
عَلىover مثلِهاthe like of it مِثليone like me يَكونshall be مُنادِميmy drinking companion
عَلى مثلِها مِثلي يَكون مُنادِمي
فإِنso if لَمnot أَجِدI find مِثليone like me خَلوتُI retire بِهاwith it وَحديalone
فإِن لَم أَجِد مِثلي خَلوتُ بِها وَحدي
Over such a cup, only one like me shall be my drinking companion;
Over such a cup, my drinking companion shall be one like me;
Over such a cup, my drinking companion must be my equal,
And if I find no peer, I retire with it alone.
so if I find no one like me, I retire alone with it.
And if I find no equal, I seclude myself with it alone.
