سَألناهُ الجَزيلَ فَما تَأنّى

سَألناهُ الجَزيلَ فَما تَأنّى

وَأَعطى فَوقَ مُنيَتِنا وَزادا

وَأَعطى فَوقَ مُنيَتِنا وَزادا

We asked him for a lavish gift, and he did not delay.

We asked him for abundant bounty, and he did not hesitate,

And he gave beyond our wish, and gave still more.

He gave far beyond our desires, and added even more.

وَأَحسَنَ ثُمَّ أَحسَنَ ثُمَّ عُدنا

وَأَحسَنَ ثُمَّ أَحسَنَ ثُمَّ عُدنا

فَأَحسَنَ ثُمَّ عُدتُ لَهُ فَعادا

فَأَحسَنَ ثُمَّ عُدتُ لَهُ فَعادا

And he was generous, then generous again; then we returned.

He was generous, then generous again, then we returned,

So he was generous; then I returned to him, and he was generous again.

So he was generous once more; then I returned to him, and he returned to giving.

مِراراً ما قَصَدتُ إِليه الّا

مِراراً ما قَصَدتُ إِليه الّا

تَبَسَّم ضاحِكاً وَثَنى الوِسادا

تَبَسَّم ضاحِكاً وَثَنى الوِسادا

Time after time, whenever I went to him,

Time after time, I never sought him out except that

He smiled, laughing, and folded the cushion.

He broke into a laughing smile and folded the cushion for me.
