Drinking companions met after the third occasion;
My regrets, after three met
Drinking companions met after a third night,
wine gathers them at Kuh Zayyan.
Were gathered by the ravine of Zayyan.
Brought together by wine in Kuh Zayyan.

I had drunk it early, and it left me
And I had reached it early and left from it
I had come to it early in the morning, and I departed from it
slain, though no wounds had struck me.
A slain man - how my wounds have afflicted me!
Slain, though no wounds had afflicted me.

They said, "O wine-seller, who is this?"
And they said “O you who sells wine, who is this?”
They asked, "O tavern-keeper, who is this?"
He said, "A brother undone by morning drinking.
He said “A brother betrayed by the morning glow.”
He replied, "A brother betrayed by his morning draught.

فَخَرَّ كَأَنَّهُ عودٌ شناحُ
He passed the wine around until it killed him outright,
He turned the wine until he made him lean backwards
He passed the wine around until it struck him down,
and he fell like a long wooden pole."
And he fell as if he was a bending branch.
And he collapsed like a tall, sturdy trunk."

Then he said, "Bring it! With wine, let us join
So he said “Give me some wine to join my companion”
Then one said, "Bring it, let us catch up through wine
him." They drank for solace, then rested.
They reproached him and then let him relax.
With him," and they sought diversion, then rested.

They had scarcely lingered before it struck them
They did not hesitate until it threw them down
They did not linger long before it struck them
with its weapon's edge—and it has a weapon indeed.
With the edge of its weapons, and it has weapons.
With the edge of its weapon—and indeed, it has a weapon.
وَحانَand the time came تَنضبُّهيmy awakening (apparent intended reading) فَسألتُso I asked عَنهُمabout them
وَحانَ تَنضبُّهي فَسألتُ عَنهُم

فَقالَ أَتاحهم قَدرٌ مُتاحُ
It was time for me to wake, so I asked about them.
It was time for it to diminish, so I asked about them
Then came my time to awaken, so I asked about them.
He said, "An appointed fate overtook them.
And he said “Fate brought them to a tavern.”
He said, "An allotted fate has overtaken them.

They saw you felled upon the ground, so they questioned me;
They saw you adorned, so they asked me
They saw you laid low, so they asked me about you,
then eagerness stirred them to drink."
And the comfort of drinking stirred them.
And a joyous desire moved them to drink."

So I said to him, "Then send me off to them
So I said to him “Let me go to them quickly”
So I said to him, "Send me off to them
swiftly—for release is success."
And setting out is success.
Swiftly, for release is true success."

He said “Yes”, so they said “Join us,
He said, "Yes," and they said, "Let us join him,
with him; dawn has appeared to the beholder."
For the dawn has appeared to the seer.”
For morning has already appeared to the beholder."

ثَلاثاً يَستَغِبُّ وَيُستَباحُ
That practice never ceased among us
We three have not ceased that habit -
And that remained our constant habit,
for three days, intermittently resumed and freely indulged.
To disappear and be violated.
For three days, taken at intervals and enjoyed freely.

We spend the night together, yet we do not meet,
in a house from which we never depart.
Meeting in a house - we have no shelters.
In a house from which we have no departure.
