ظفَرُZafar بنُson of عبدِAbd (servant of) اللهِAllah أكmost generous (first part)
ظفَرُ بنُ عبدِ اللهِ أك
رَمُmost generous (completion) منthose whom يُصافِيهِbefriends him sincerely المُصافيthe sincere friend
رَمُ من يُصافِيهِ المُصافي
Zafar ibn Abdullah is the most
Zafar son of Abdullah is more generous
generous of those whom a sincere friend befriends.
Than those who try to equal him in generosity
حُرُّa noble, free man يَفيkeeps faith لصَديقهِto his friend
حُرُّ يَفي لصَديقهِ
بعُهودِهِin his pledges والحُرُّand the noble man وافيfaithful
بعُهودِهِ والحُرُّ وافي
A noble man, he keeps faith with his friend
A free man who fulfills his promises to his friend
in his pledges—and a noble man is faithful.
And the free man is faithful
لكنِنَّيbut I أشكوI lament نواseparation (first part)
لكنِنَّي أشكو نوا
هُhis (completing 'his separation') فوخزُهُfor its sting وخزُthe sting of الأَشافيthe awls
هُ فوخزُهُ وخزُ الأَشافي
Yet I lament his being far
Yet I complain of the stabbing of love
away; its sting is the sting of awls.
And the stabbing of passions
شكوىthe lament of وَقيذٍone sorely stricken ماno لِعلَّfor the ailment (first part)
شكوى وَقيذٍ ما لِعلَّ
تهِhis (completing 'his ailment') سوىexcept لُقياهُmeeting him شافيa healer
تهِ سوى لُقياهُ شافي
The lament of one sorely stricken, with no cure for
A complaint of burning passion but what
his ailment save meeting him.
Can cure it except meeting him as a healer
فلْيَرْعَso let him safeguard ثابتَsteadfast عَهدِهِhis pledge
فلْيَرْعَ ثابتَ عَهدِهِ
كيلاso that not يُزعزعَهshake it التَّجافيestrangement
كيلا يُزعزعَه التَّجافي
So let him safeguard his steadfast pledge,
So may he keep his pledge steadfast
lest estrangement shake it.
Lest it be shaken by estrangement
ولْيُسْقَand let it be watered غَرسُthe sapling of وفائهِhis loyalty
ولْيُسْقَ غَرسُ وفائهِ
وصَفائهِand his sincerity سَقْيَthe watering of الظِّرافِthe gracious people
وصَفائهِ سَقْيَ الظِّرافِ
And let his loyalty's sapling be watered,
And may he water the plant of his loyalty
and his sincerity's, as the gracious would.
And purity with the watering of friendship
ولْيُتْبعِand let him follow up البِرَّthe kindness القديthe former (first part)
ولْيُتْبعِ البِرَّ القدي
مَthe former (completion) بصَفْوِبِرٍّwith pure kindness كالسُّلافِlike the choicest wine
مَ بصَفْوِبِرٍّ كالسُّلافِ
And let him follow up the kindness of
And may he follow the old goodness
old with pure kindness, like the choicest wine.
With new pure goodness like honey
إنَّindeed القوادِمَthe primary flight feathers بالخَواby the secondary feathers (first part)
إنَّ القوادِمَ بالخَوا
فيsecondary feathers (completion) والقَصائِدَand the poems بالقوافيby the rhymes
في والقَصائِدَ بالقوافي
Indeed, primary feathers are complemented by
Verily those who come with true love
secondary feathers, and poems by rhymes.
And poems with rhymes
