لنا صاحبٌ يُصفي العُلومَ وأهلَها

عداوَةَ كُفرانِ الصّنائعِ للشُّكْرِ

عداوَةَ كُفرانِ الصّنائعِ للشُّكْرِ

We have a companion who harbors toward the sciences and their practitioners

We have a friend who purifies knowledge and its people

the pure enmity that ingratitude for favors bears toward gratitude.

From the enmity of ingratitude for skills

يُقطِّبُ إنْ سمّيتَ قُطباً ومِحوَراً

يُقطِّبُ إنْ سمّيتَ قُطباً ومِحوَراً

ويقطُرُ خَلاًّ حين يلفظُ بالقَطْرِ

ويقطُرُ خَلاًّ حين يلفظُ بالقَطْرِ

He scowls if you mention a pole and an axis,

He frowns if you name him an axis and pivot

and drips vinegar when he utters the word “diameter.”
