عذَلوني وأنكرَوا أخلاقي

عذَلوني وأنكرَوا أخلاقي

وتواصَوْا جميعُهُمْ بفِراقي

وتواصَوْا جميعُهُمْ بفِراقي

They reproached me and disapproved of my character.

They blamed me and denied my morals,

And all of them urged one another to part from me.

And they all conspired to part from me,

ورأوْا أنَّني مَرِيعٌ بزُهدي

ورأوْا أنَّني مَرِيعٌ بزُهدي

في مَلاهِيهِمْ نَفاقُ نِفاقي

في مَلاهِيهِمْ نَفاقُ نِفاقي

And they thought that through my abstinence

And they saw that I was content in my asceticism

From their diversions, my hypocrisy found a thriving market.

From their entertainments, the hypocrisy of my hypocrisy.

قلْتُ لا تعجَلوا علَىَّ بِلَوْمٍ

قلْتُ لا تعجَلوا علَىَّ بِلَوْمٍ

وتأَنَّوْا فلِلأُمورِ مَراقي

وتأَنَّوْا فلِلأُمورِ مَراقي

I said, “Do not hasten to blame me;

I said, "Do not hasten to blame me,

And take your time, for matters have their stages.”

And be patient, for things have their progress."
