لا اُنْسَ إلاّ في مجالِسَ تلتقي

لا اُنْسَ إلاّ في مجالِسَ تلتقي

بفنائها الأشكالُ والنُّظَراءُ

بفنائها الأشكالُ والنُّظَراءُ

There is no fellowship except in gatherings where

I find joy in gatherings where

kindred spirits and peers meet within their precincts.

Kindred spirits and peers unite.

فلْيَجْتَنِبْني كلُّ نَذلٍ جاهِل

فلْيَجْتَنِبْني كلُّ نَذلٍ جاهِل

ولْيَصْطنِعْني سادتي العُلماءُ

ولْيَصْطنِعْني سادتي العُلماءُ

So let every base, ignorant man avoid me,

So let ignoramuses shun me,

and let my masters, the scholars, bestow their favor on me.

And let the learned seek my company.

إنَّ الجَهولَ تَضرُّني أخلاقه

إنَّ الجَهولَ تَضرُّني أخلاقه

ضررُ السُّعالِ بِمَنْ بهِ اسْتِسقاءُ

ضررُ السُّعالِ بِمَنْ بهِ اسْتِسقاءُ

Indeed, the ignorant man's conduct harms me

For fools do harm me with their ways,

as coughing harms one afflicted with dropsy.

As coughing harms the sick man as he prays.
