فَمنْso whoever كتَمَconcealed المعروفَthe kindness مِنهُمْamong them فَماthen not شَكَرْgave thanks
The sign of a person's gratitude is his openly voiced praise.
So whoever among them conceals a kindness has not given thanks.
إذاif ماemphatic particle صَديقيmy friend نالَreceived خَيراًsome good فخانَنيthen he betrayed me
فَماthen not الذَّنبُthe blame عنديin my view لِلّذيfor the one who خانِbetrayed أوor فَجَرْacted wickedly
If my friend receives some good and then betrays me,
Then, in my view, no blame rests on the one who betrays or acts wickedly.
ولكِنْand yet إذاif أكرمْتُهُI honored him بعدَafter كُفْرِهِhis ingratitude
فإنِّيthen indeed I مَلومٌblameworthy حيثُsince أُكرِمُI honor مَنْone who كَفَرْwas ungrateful
But if I honor him after his ingratitude,
Then I am blameworthy, since I honor one who has been ungrateful.
