فيما يحاولُهُ نقضٌ وإمرارُ
Tell him whom power has beguiled and who has been aided
Say to him whom pride and power beguiled,
in his endeavors by untying and tightening:
In all he seeks to undo or build—

فإنَّ أصلَكَ يا فخَّارُ فَخّارُ
Do not boast of wealth upon whose back you were mounted;
Do not exult in riches newly piled,
for your origin, O braggart, is baked clay.
Thy nature is but base and vile.

This—but among those who excuse, O [unclear word],
So 'tis with thee; when Fortune smiles,
there is decline, though it accompanies prosperity.
Remember—for she frowns the while.
