ذَكِّرْ أخاكَ إذا تناسى واجِباً

أو عَنَّ في آرائهِ تَقصيرُ

أو عَنَّ في آرائهِ تَقصيرُ

Remind your brother when he neglects a duty,

Remind your brother if he forgets a duty

or a shortcoming appears in his judgments;

Or is remiss in his views and opinions

فالرَّأيُ يَصْدَأُ كالحُسامِ لعارضِ

فالرَّأيُ يَصْدَأُ كالحُسامِ لعارضِ

يطرا عَليهِ وَصْقلُهُ التَّذكيرُ

يطرا عَليهِ وَصْقلُهُ التَّذكيرُ

for judgment rusts like a keen sword from an affliction

For opinion rusts like a sword from disuse

that comes upon it, and reminders are its polish.

Sharpen it with the whetstone of reminder
